Gisela Rosario Ramos, also known as Macha Colón, is an "undisciplined" Puerto Rican artist, documentary filmmaker, cultural manager, performer, and musician based in San Juan. She studied African American and Puerto Rican Studies, Fine Arts, and Film and Media Studies at Hunter College in New York, where she began her career as a documentary editor. Gisela has worked as a cultural events producer and artistic director at Casa de Cultura Ruth Hernández in Puerto Rico. Her award-winning short documentary "El Hijo de Ruby" has been shown at numerous international festivals. She is the frontwoman of the rock/pop band Macha Colón y Los Okapi, whose album includes the queer youth anthem "Jayá." She is also a winner in Puerto Rico of DocTV with "Cartas de amor para una ícona" (Love Letters to an Icon), a documentary about Puerto Rican queer diva Lucecita Benítez which was presented in 21 Ibero-American countries. Gisela is a grantee of the Art Matters Foundation and NALAC, and received the United States Artist Fellowship in 2021. Her first narrative feature film, "Perfume de Gardenias," premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021 and won multiple awards, including Best Feature Film at the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival and the Guadeloupe International Film Festival. She received the inaugural William Greaves Fund from Firelight Media and the Resiliency Award from the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture in Chicago. She has directed several music videos for independent artists such as MIMA, Ani Cordero, and Neysa Blay. Currently, Gisela is directing an Afro-futuristic TV show for the Tiznando el País project, an initiative that celebrates and puts into perspective the contributions of the Afro-descendant population to Puerto Rican visual culture. The show specifically focuses on the art exhibitions of this project.
